Dr Earp wonders if you – or your child – has been told to have wisdom teeth removed, and you may have wondered why one would remove perfectly fine teeth. We like to keep our patients informed, so here is info about this subject:
Wisdom teeth (officially known as the third molars), are usually the last teeth to develop. They are located at the very back of the mouth, and usually complete development between the ages of 15 and 20. Many people do not have room in their mouth for a full set of 32 permanent teeth to erupt into the jaw and be fully functional and able to be cleaned. When this occurs the wisdom teeth are said to be impacted, indicating their inability to be in a good position for chewing, or they may only be partly through the gum, or they may remain below the gum, hidden in the jawbone. With these cases it is often recommended that they be removed. The younger the age of the patient when they are removed, the less likely it is that there will be any complications, and if a dentist can see that there will be a problem with wisdom teeth, this is the reason they are often extracted when children are in their teens. Extraction is usually done by an oral surgeon, and Dr. Earp can recommend the right person for this. Here at All Smiles Family Dentistry in Olathe, Kansas, we firmly believe in the adage "Prevention is better than cure".  This certainly applies to preventing cavities in teeth.  However, tooth decay remains one of the most common diseases of childhood, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
-more than 25% of 2 to 5 year-olds have one or more cavities
-half of kids 12 to 15 years old have one or more cavities
-tooth decay affects two thirds of 16 to 19 year-olds
These statistics do not sound very good, but there actually has been a dramatic reduction in tooth decay in the past 30 years, attributed mainly to fluoridation of the water supply, and parents and health professionals should continue to ensure that kids receive enough fluoride to prevent cavities.  If your drinking water comes from a well or another source that is not fluoridated, ask us about applications of fluoride directly to the teeth.

People use their teeth to bite and chew food - they are the first step in the digestion of food. The long, sharp canine teeth tear up food (like meat). The wide, flat molars grind and mash up food. While we chew food, the tongue pushes the food to the teeth and saliva helps digestion and wets the food. Teeth also help us say certain sounds.
People have two sets of teeth in their lives, the primary teeth (also called the baby, milk or deciduous teeth) and the permanent teeth (also called the adult or secondary teeth). Children have 20 primary teeth; they are replaced by the permanent teeth by about age 13. Adults have 32 permanent teeth.
Primary Teeth:
Most babies are born with no visible teeth - the teeth are forming inside the gums. The 20 primary teeth (also called baby teeth or first teeth) erupt (poke through the gums) over the time from when a baby is from about 6 months to a year old.
Permanent Teeth:
Primary teeth fall out and are replaced by 32 permanent teeth (also called the adult teeth). This happens over the time from when a child is from about 6 to 14 years old.
As a permanent tooth forms under the gums and in the jawbone, the roots of the primary tooth it is replacing dissolve. Then the primary tooth becomes loose and falls out. The permanent tooth will fill the space.
Wisdom Teeth:
Wisdom teeth (also called the third molars) are molars that usually erupt from the ages of 17 to 21.
